One of the main problems our prisoners face is the lack of qualified legal assistance.

State-appointed lawyers either do not work with pre-trial detainees at all or do so very poorly.

Lawyers say they cannot afford to visit prisoners at their own expense, familiarize themselves with the case, and that is understandable...

As a result, many are serving sentences for more serious charges than their actual crimes.

They are imprisoned simply because they were not provided with qualified legal defense.

That’s why we need funds to pay for legal representation—even if only a symbolic payment—
